This month we are highlighting Business Owner Tales featuring Cannon Carr:

“Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.” A boxer’s poignant description of
life in the ring feels all too familiar for business owners, who worry about the myriad shocks
that could undermine their business profitability and personal wealth. As CEO and Owner of
CornerCap, Cannon Carr speaks from personal experience, having led his firm through several
shocks in recent years that tested his mettle as both leader and owner. He shares those lessons
in his forthcoming book Personal Profit: How to Build Financial Independence from Your
Business, in addition to exploring how entrepreneurs can balance competing demands of
business and personal liquidity. Carr has made it his mission to empower business owners to
achieve financial independence from their business so they can better navigate the inevitable
shocks every business owner will face and help build a path to sustained financial freedom.

Prior to joining CornerCap as Chief Investment Officer in 2010, Carr spent a decade on Wall
Street as an Investment Analyst studying the business health of communications companies,
from private start-ups to public companies in the Fortune 500. He now leverages that expertise
to benefit business owners whose livelihood depends on the health of their business. Carr
developed the 3Rs® framework to guide business owners through decisions that contemplate
what’s right for the owner’s personal finances as well as their business goals. For every dollar of
profit a business generates, its owner can choose to take personal financial Reward, Reinvest in
the business, or Repurpose funds to diversify into outside investments.

In his biweekly podcast “Business Owner Tales from the Trenches,” Carr also mines for insights
from business owners across an array of industries on how they, too, navigated disruptions in
their business ownership journeys.

Carr, proud husband and father of three sons, lives in Atlanta and is highly engaged in public
service in the city where he was born and raised. Most recently he served as President of the
Rotary Club of Atlanta, among the organization’s largest in the US, and Chair of the Advisory
Board for the Center for Ethics at Emory University. He received his undergraduate degree in
Politics and Economics from Princeton University and earned an MBA from Columbia
University.
